Soil Evaluations and Studies

Stetson employs soil scientists with a broad range of experience in the collection of soil physical and chemical data; the interpretation of that data; and the application and use of the data. These studies include Irrigation Development and Management, Soil Inventories (Mapping and Classification), Soil Monitoring and Research, and Permitting and Planning for Agriculture and Industry. Stetson’s Certified Professional Soil Scientists, Certified Professional Soil Classifiers, and Licensed Professional Geoscientists have conducted studies including:

Irrigation Development and Management

• Reconnaissance studies and feasibility studies for irrigation development in the states of Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada and Utah; and in the countries of Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Ghana
• Detailed-level studies to construct irrigation projects
• Management-related studies to assist in the assessment of problem lands in irrigated areas and plan the remediation of those lands. These include the preparation of detailed soil salinity maps to assess productivity issues, drainage issues, and leaching effectiveness

Soil Mapping and Classification

• Order 1, 2, and 3 soil surveys in the states of California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Alabama, and Georgia

Soil Monitoring and Research

• Soil moisture monitoring for irrigated lands and for native habitat restoration
• Soil salinity monitoring in irrigated fields and in areas planned for habitat restoration
• Monitoring the physical and chemical properties of soils in research areas to measure the effects of irrigation with poor-quality water

Permitting and Planning for Agriculture and Industry

• Topsoil surveys and characterization for mining reclamation
• Land spreading of sludge on native rangelands
• Wastewater application on rangelands or use as irrigation water
